Does Acupuncture Therapy Increase The Likelihood Of Success With IVF?

Clinical research suggests that acupuncture can help with the likelihood of success with IVF. One study took 160 women* undergoing IVF and split them into two groups. One group combined acupuncture with IVF and the other control group did not. The findings showed that the group that received acupuncture had a 50% better outcome than the group that did IVF alone. Learn more about this study here.

In a separate research study published in the British Medical Journal, the researchers found that women completing IVF who underwent additional acupuncture were 65% more likely to have a successful embryo transfer compared with those who underwent no extra treatment. You can read about this study here.

How Does Acupuncture Help IVF Success?

Here at Health Wise, we use acupuncture to treat patients who are undergoing IVF and we are proud of our success rates.

Our positive experiences at the clinic are reflected in research showing that acupuncture can promote blood circulation in the pelvic cavity and improve ovarian function.

Acupuncture can be beneficial in promoting follicle production, enhancing uterine blood flow, and improving uterine lining thickness. It can also help to decrease uterine contractions after embryo transfer.

How Does Acupuncture To Support IVF Work At Health Wise?

Acupuncture may work for some people straight away, however, the effects tend to be cumulative. Ideally, we aim to see our patients once to twice a week in the three months before undergoing IVF treatment. Alternatively, if this option is not possible, we recommend coming in when you start your IVF cycle.

At Health Wise, we see our patients twice a week when they are taking the follicle-stimulating drugs. In addition, we prefer to schedule treatment before egg retrieval as well as another before embryo transfer.

Lastly, we recommend our patients to come in for a treatment 24 – 48 hours after the embryo transfer so that an acupuncture treatment session can help to prevent uterine spasms.

Chinese Medicine and Herbs For Fertility

Each person’s body and composition are different, and at Health Wise we tailor-make solutions to your unique pattern of symptoms. Incorporating targeted herbs in a comprehensive fertility plan makes it possible to increase the chances of fertility enough to help some couples conceive.

The Chinese herbal approach is amongst the most sophisticated herbal systems that have been developed. In Traditional Chinese Medicine herbal therapy, herbs are rarely taken by themselves but are instead used in an effective combination prescribed in a formula to address your unique pattern of symptoms and improve the function of the body as a whole.

A meta-analysis found that Chinese herbs can increase fertility by two-fold within a four-month period when used appropriately. We use thousands of herbs in Chinese Medicine and each formula is uniquely customized to each patient's condition. The value of the herbs comes from using them in the appropriate combinations and correct amounts to gain their utmost effectiveness.

We recommend getting in contact with us or coming to our clinic for a diagnosis and taking the most appropriate herbal formula to suit your needs. Working with an experienced practitioner of Chinese medicine can increase your chances of conception.

Using herbal therapy alone or in combination with acupuncture during the time before an IVF cycle is often supported by Reproductive Endocrinologists (REs).

Herbal medicine is safe and effective under correct supervision. It is important to ensure that your herbal supplements are of high quality.
