Our team at Health Wise has helped patients for over 30+ years since 1997, using Traditional Chinese Medicine techniques to try to cure the root cause of health issues. For years, we have observed a disturbing trend of increasing autoimmune disorders (e.g., allergies, lupus, Crohn s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, and different types of thyroid disorders). What concerns us with regard to this increase in immune system dysfunction is how it affects fertility.
For people who experience autoimmune issues endometriosis, recurrent miscarriage, and failed IVF are common problems.
As a leading Traditional Chinese Medicine & acupuncture clinic in Hong Kong, one of our specialized areas of treatment is fertility. Autoimmune Diseases & Fertility
Several lines of evidence suggest that autoimmune issues can influence the reproductive life and fertility of both sexes, commonly manifesting as infertility or pregnancy loss. Autoimmunity can affect all stages of fertility, from ovarian failure to testicular failure, implantation failure, and pregnancy loss. For women, endometriosis, recurrent miscarriage, and failed IVF are common problems for people who experience autoimmune issues.
Health Wise sees autoimmune symptoms as the 3rd most commonly ignored premise for infertility, after infections and endometriosis. If you have suffered from repeated miscarriages, your immune system may have a role to play. Approximately 20% of miscarriages are related to autoimmune reactions. Imagine the body experiencing an allergic reaction to the embryo. “Unexplained infertility” may be misinterpreted; recurrent miscarriages may be due to inappropriate immune reactions.
There are four main indicators of immune problems in people with recurrent pregnancy loss:
1. Antithyroid antibodies
2. Antiphospholipid antibodies
3. Natural killer cells
4. Antinuclear antibodies
You can read more about each of these here. There are very specific western medical treatments that can help in each of these scenarios. You should consult an Obstetrician-Gynecologist (with an immunology specialty) to discuss the conventional medical approach.
Traditional Chinese Medicine For Autoimmune Diseases
When applied appropriately, Traditional Chinese Medicine is a considerably effective treatment for an overactive immune system.
You may think that the best way to tackle an immune system problem is to further boost the immune system. That would resemble what a conventional healthcare professional would do if you caught a cold or had some indication of immune deficiency. But further boosting the immune system when it is already overactive, is a mistake from the Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective.
We aim to gradually bring your body back into balance, instead of overwhelmingly supercharging it. This requires the work of an experienced practitioner who has the skills to adapt treatments and herbal formulas to your body's shifting internal landscape.
Creating Change Today
One of the best ways you can help yourself is by being proactive:
See a practitioner of Traditional Chinese medicine for herbal therapy & acupuncture to tailor a treatment plan for your specific condition.
Find your method for reducing stress. Stress in large amounts increases the production of cortisol which affects your immune system.
Avoid alcohol & smoking. Limit refined sugar & caffeine. These particular lifestyle choices all place stress on your immune system.
Avoid gluten. For more information on how gluten can exacerbate an autoimmune condition read this article.
Increase your intake of antioxidants; vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene which are beneficial for your immune system. It’s best to include these naturally in your diet.
Consider taking a zinc supplement to assist your immune system.
Ask your doctor about taking a para-aminobenzoic acid supplement (PABA) which can help specific autoimmune conditions.
Ingest alkaline-producing foods such as whole grains (gluten-free) and vegetables
Monitor folic acid intake; around 2 to 3mg per day.

Acupuncture & IVF
Clinical research suggests that acupuncture can help with the likelihood of success with IVF. One study took 160 women* undergoing IVF and split them into two groups. One group combined acupuncture with IVF and the other control group did not. The findings showed that the group that received acupuncture had a 50% better outcome than the group that did IVF alone. Learn more about this study here.
In a separate research study published in the British Medical Journal, the researchers found that women completing IVF who underwent additional acupuncture were 65% more likely to have a successful embryo transfer compared with those who underwent no extra treatment. You can read about this study here.
How Does Acupuncture Help IVF Success?
Here at Health Wise, we use acupuncture to treat patients who are undergoing IVF and we are proud of our success rates.
Our positive experiences at the clinic are reflected in research showing that acupuncture can promote blood circulation in the pelvic cavity and improve ovarian function.
Acupuncture can be beneficial in promoting follicle production, enhancing uterine blood flow, and improving uterine lining thickness. It can also help to decrease uterine contractions after embryo transfer.
How Does Acupuncture To Support IVF Work At Health Wise?
Acupuncture may work for some people straight away, however, the effects tend to be cumulative. Ideally, we aim to see our patients once to twice a week for three months before undergoing IVF treatment. Alternatively, if this option is not possible, we recommend coming in when you start your IVF cycle.
At Health Wise, we see our patients twice a week when they are taking follicle-stimulating drugs. In addition, we prefer to schedule treatment before egg retrieval as well as another before embryo transfer.
Lastly, we recommend our patients come in for treatment 24 – 48 hours after the embryo transfer so that an acupuncture treatment session can help to prevent uterine spasms.
